ParaFed Organisations
In 1965 Auckland set up the first local ParaFed association (Paraplegic & Physically Disabled Federation. In 1966 a team of 9 Aucklanders and 1 Dunedin competitor went to the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica.
In 1968 the New Zealand Parapegic & Physically Disabled Federation (ParaFed New Zealand) was formed as the national body for disability sport to enable an official team to represent New Zealand at the Paralympic Games in Tel Aviv.
In general the mission of local ParaFed's is "to provide opportunities and encourage all people with physical disabilities to participate in life to the full in the areas of sport and recreation"
General Objectives:
- to create awareness
- to provide opportunities to develop skills and enable inclusion and integration into the community
- to develop and promote Junior programmes
- to liaises with exisiting and future groups catering for people wih physical disabilities
- to organise suitable continuity programmes and activities to enhance development of sports and recreation
- to encourage participation and activity to develop social skills, confindence levels, quality of life and well being.
As all the regions in New Zealand are unique the ParaFed Branches are also different around New Zealand and may run different programmes etc.
ParaFed Branches are found in most regions and are thee to assist you to participate in sport and recreation activities of your choice.
