Athletics
Ben Lucas, wheelchair racer, is gaining international
reputation by winning bronze at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, captaining
the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics, coming 3rd in the Los Angeles Marathon
2000. At the Swiss Nationals where competition against the Europeans
is hot, Ben came 4th in the 1,500m, 2nd in the 5,000m and 3rd
in the 10,000m breaking a NZ record every time.
Field athlete Peter Martin is a world record holder in
field events while John Dowall has ranked second in the
world in pentathalon. John is a below knee amputee and Britton
Motorcycles has developed a prototype for a prosthetic specifically
for his javelin event. It will be interesting to watch both these
athletes in Sydney.
Dave MacCalman was in the US on a basketball scholarship
before breaking his neck in a diving accident. His efforts then
turned to athletics and at one stage held every NZ record in his
grade from 100m to 10,000m track, shot put, javelin, discus, club
and pentathlon. Dave is an experienced athlete who has competed
at Seoul, Barcelona and Atlanta. He also broke a World Record
in javelin at the 1999 World Wheelchair Games held in Christchurch.
Youngster Matt Slade who has cerebral palsy is ranked
2nd in the world in 200m and 100m, while Tim Prendergast
an athlete with a visual impairment is also another medal contender.
These athletes regularly compete against their able-bodied peers
with excellent results.
Tanya Bradley is our only female competing in athletics
where she will compete in 100m, 200m and high jump. Gaining a
Bronze in high jump at the 1998 World Champs in Birmingham Tanya
will be New Zealand's first athlete with an intellectual disability
to compete at a Paralympic Games.
Runner Dave Collie has already competed on the tough and
challenging Sydney marathon course in April in a time of 2hr57mins.
Dave, a double arm amputee from an electrical accident will be
competing in a class above his own, ie. against other athletes
with a lesser disability.
Gavin Foulsham an experienced wheelchair track athlete
competed at the 1992 Paralympic Games. Eight years on, Gavin has
gained a wealth of knowledge and experience, showing his improving
form at the 2000 Australian Nationals winning 1st places in 800m
and 1,500m. Gavin and Ben Lucas will be competing in Switzerland
in August in the 1,500m which is a trial for the finals to be
held in Sydney at the Olympic Games in September. If they make
the final, they will be the first New Zealander(s) to compete
at both the Olympics and the Paralyampic Games in the same year.

Cycling
Cycling has two brilliant riders in Paul Jesson and Mark
Inglis. Paul was a Tour de France rider before losing part
of his leg in an accident. After some time out of competitive
cycling Paul competed at the 1998 World Champs in Colorado breaking
a World Record in the 4,000m Individual Pursuit. Mark survived
an avalanche on Mt Cook in 1982 and lost both legs below the knee
to frostbite. With a strong sporting background Mark moved into
competitive cycling and gained a 9th placing at the 1998 World
Champs. Both are talented cyclists and it will be exciting to
watch them in Sydney.

Sailing
Andrew May will compete in the 2.4m single handed class
after gaining a place in the 1998 World Champs in Finland. Another
round of World Champs in Melbourne 2000 saw Andrew improve his
placing to an overall position of 19th out of 65 in the open fleet
and 4th disabled sailor.
New Zealand received a wildcard for our Sonar crew for Sydney.
So with four experienced sailors in Martin Clark, Chris
Wood, Phil Edwards and Garth Reynolds we will
be competitive on the water. The crew is an interesting mixture
of disabilities with two amputees, one paraplegic and Garth who
was part of the crew who won Gold at the 1999 Blind Sailing World
Champs.

Swimming
Freestyle specialist Dean Booth, first broke a World Record
in 100m Freestyle at the 1998 World Champs, and then broke his
own World Record in 1999 at the British Opens. He also placed
1st at the World Champs in 400m Freestyle. Dean, who has cerebral
palsy has been the National Champ in four events over the past
five years.
Hayden Brown will swim at his 2nd Paralympic Games after
his best placing of 9th at Atlanta. Showing his improving form
at the 2000 British Open Hayden placed 3rd in Butterfly. He aims
to finish in the top 5 in all events and swim Personal Bests in
Sydney.
5th at the 1998 World Champs in 400m Freestyle Hadleigh Pierson,
who has Osteogensis Imperfecta, is improving steadily as his results
from major international meets show. At the 2000 Dutch Open Hadleigh
placed 1st. A week later, at a meet with increased number of competitiors,
he swum to a 2nd placing at the British Open. Hadleigh will be
celebrating his 20th birthday during the Paralympic Games.
The New Zealand Paralympic Team's youngest competitor Gillian
Pollock has broken two World Records this year in the 200m
Backstroke short course and 200m Breaststroke long course. With
two World Records under her belt in different events Gillian's
aim to win Gold in the 200m Individual Medley looks promising.
Sean Tretheway spends his life in and around pools with
a job as a lifeguard he cannot help but spend plenty of time in
the pool preparing for Sydney. Competing against the highly rated
European swimmers at the recent 2000 Dutch and British Opens,
Sean had several top 3 placings.
