About The Organisation

Paralympics New Zealand is the recognised National Sporting Organisation for people with disabilities. We are recognised by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) as the National Paralympic Committee responsible for Paralympic sport in New Zealand. We support and encourage sporting opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in all levels, from club level, regional and national competition through to international competition. Sports are offered through a network of regional ParaFed Associations, regional and national Sport Specific Groups, National Sporting Organisations, clubs, coaches and individuals. Paralympics New Zealand supports developing and high performance athletes through its "Paralympic Squad Programme". It currently includes athletes across 11 sports. On an international scale, Paralympics New Zealand provides athletes with access to a host of international competitions, including World Championships and the Paralympic Games. We are involved in organising, funding, outfitting and supporting New Zealand teams to these international events.

Regional Games

Regional games are held throughout the year by Sport Specific Groups, eg. wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis; ParaFeds, eg. Parafed Canterbury; and NSOs, eg. Athletics Waikato.

Paralympics New Zealand National Multi Sports Championships

The National Sports Champs have historically been hosted annually by ParaFeds around the country on a rostered basis.  However, the 2000 Nationals marked the end of the annual nationals, as a new format has been adopted.  From 2001 the National Multi Sports Champs will be held every two years. Every other year, the Nationals will be included in sport specific able-bodied events. This means that the 100m wheelchair final may be held before the 100m mens final at the Athletics New Zealand Nationals. However, our sport specific groups, eg. wheelchair rugby, boccia etc, will still hold their Nationals annually. They also have the opportunity to include an additional competition in conjunction with PNZ Nationals.
